PanelMax from Grabber is shaping a drywall-driven market
PanelMax, the high-tech board milling machine from Grabber, is changing the future of interior construction. And New York City seems to agree. Union professionals in the Big Apple and the Labor Technical College there have adopted this revolutionary approach to panel fabrication. Both consider PanelMax to be an advantage that sets their workers and students apart.

Preparing future professionals with PanelMax Following in the footsteps of the New York City District Council of Carpenters, the Labor Technical College (LTC) recently purchased PanelMax and trains apprentices in its use. “The importance of having it here now is that some have already seen it on the job. So when they get out in the field, and when the contractor asks who’s used it, they can raise their hand,” says school instructor Manny Nieves. “I’ve been teaching this class for four years, and this machine has changed the way I teach the curriculum.”

Joe Campo, Shop Steward at the city’s iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza agrees. “They’re going to see this in their career more than we will.” Indeed, carpenters rely on the PanelMax machine for drywall assemblies at that location as well as other union projects throughout the city.

Bringing greater quality and efficiency to drywall assemblies
The difference is the revolutionary way PanelMax delivers precision cutting, and in turn, faster assembly. Laser-guided milling and sawing units ensure accuracy and create perfect angles and complex profiles.

“It does very clean work, it minimizes the waste of the materials,” explains Nieves. “…In the long run, the economics of it for the contractor are very good.” Campo puts the efficiencies of PanelMax into context of his everyday work. “If I can save 10 minutes on 20 feet of detail, times 1,600 linear feet, in the end that makes me more productive…and more competitive.”

A big win for big city construction work
PanelMax is a natural fit for New York City and its ongoing demand for interior systems in high-rise office buildings and condos. In the case of 30 Rockefeller Plaza, drywall is the majority of work according to Campo. The ability to have a fabrication machine on site keeps workers productive while delivering exceptional results.

The new PanelMax CM10 will likely draw more praise. Smaller and portable, the CM10 fits in a wheeled case about the size of a golf bag and can be easily moved from floor to floor. It’s ideal for smaller, custom installations while the larger PanelMax ST48 and FT30 machines have found a niche cutting multiple modular components. Plus, PanelMax opens opportunities for selling fabricated panels to other companies. “If a non-union site can’t afford to buy the machine, they can afford to buy the product from someone with the machine,” suggests Nieves.

Architects, too, are seeing the value of PanelMax installations. “…When [architects and designers] see how quick this is and the labor that it reduces, you might start seeing more intricate designs in projects,” comments Walter Warzecha of LTC. In fact, more architects are specifying the use of PanelMax because of its exclusive ability to deliver complex designs and exacting quality standards.

PanelMax is a competitive advantage for companies and skilled workers
That brings the story back to visions of the future held by union members and LTC. “Union carpenters are going to have one more tool to help them stand above the non-union sector,” reads a recent article in union publication The Carpenter.

Gaining traction in New York City in the last two years, PanelMax is “really starting to change the industry,” says Nieves. As an instructor of upcoming workers, Nieves envangelizes the advantage of PanelMax technology and how those skills will set his students apart. “In five years, I see most companies either having [a PanelMax machine] or having access to one, because it’s going to save you money: on labor, on callbacks, on materials, on everything.”
